Lovepreet Singh is a PhD candidate at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. He sat down for an interview at the 2026 AEA poster session to talk about the long-run effects of public spending and investment on regional economies. He found that during the US Civil War, short-term regional government interventions led to large and persistent growth in population, employment, and wages.
