Enel Shirinli on colonialism and trust

How did colonial policies affect institutional trust and out-group bias among ethnic groups?

Enel Shirinli is a PhD candidate at the University of South Florida. She sat down for an interview at the 2026 AEA poster session to talk about Morocco's experience under the French and Spanish protectorates in the 20th century. She found that areas that lived under the French colonial administration's discriminatory policies had less trust in the parliament and president, compared to their Spanish-administered counterparts.
